Rosalie's Fanfiction draft/plan

"The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night."

So far I plan to write about a book called "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern.  The book is set in the 19th century and is about two magicians that have been trained to fight each other since they were both children, the battleground is the circus and the two must compete by creating different attractions, more amazing and spectacular than anything seen before. As a result everyone in the circus stops aging and remains exactly the same during the 13 years the book takes place, in the end though the book finishes with the two magicians relinquishing control and becoming part of the circus.

The Fanfiction will take place in the 21st century and will go with the idea that everyone participating in the circus has stopped aging and can't die from natural causes. This will let me involve characters that are from the book as they are still alive today. However, I don't want to write about the circus from the view of an insider, as it is in the book, but from that of an outsider, of someone attending the circus for the very first time. Parts of the book are written in 2nd person, particularly the epilogue which gave me the idea for this, and I plan to try and do this, which will be challenging... Hopefully it will work and sound more like  this poem by Neil Gaiman, and not just me ordering the reader around.

My 5 Fanfictions:
Le Cirque des Reves- This fanfiction has no set time period, but takes place when one of the character in the book has grown up, so it can be assumed that it takes place after the events of the book. The fanfic uses second person consistently throughout the first three chapters and then switches to third and first person in other chapters. In these chapters the head of the circus is interviewing for more acts and the reader is introduced to characters that are joining the circus. The story then follows the friendship, however the fanfiction has yet to be finished and no official plot has been developed, although there are thoughts that the two girls who joined the circus have dangerous paths that will follow them. The first three chapters were quite helpful as they were in second person and it helped give me a a feel for what second person looks like and gave me some help on how I should write it.

Enter Any Tent- This fanfiction focuses on a different tent every chapter, allowing the reader to experience the circus without having to leave their own home. I quite liked this one as it had a similar idea to mine. This fanfiction also introduces new tents from outside of those established in the book, which was an interesting idea. Especially as it went with the idea that the circus is constantly evolving and growing. The use of second person in this fanfic was also useful, perhaps more so, as the word "you" was used less, which makes it seem more natural. As I struggled to not overuse "you" I found this really helpful.

The Picture Window- This is a short, one-off story that focuses on one tent within the circus. This tent in particular holds dozens of windows that look out onto different sights. This is one tent that I can't remember being in the book, although it does appear in other fanfictions. This fanfiction helped me be a bit more creative with some of the tents, although the tents I wrote about are in the books, after reading this fanfic I had no problems redesigning them a bit. The use of second person also helped, although I found that it did encourage me to use "You" more than the previous fanfic.

Upon Another Night- a fanfiction featuring two OC's that attend the circus for the first time. In this fanfiction  three of the characters from the book are heavily involved, and it shows how they have grown up to handle the affairs of the circus. It also features new characters that are in the circus now, showing that it has evolved since the 1800's. Although the fanfic is written in first person, it gave me some ideas on how to incorporate the characters from the previous books into my fanfic. In particular Celia and Marco, who at the end of the book become ghost like, are mentioned and inspired me to do the same in my fanfiction.

A Rêveur's Tale-This fanfiction takes place during the events of the book and spans one night, it is from the point of view of someone who has already attended the circus. This too, was written in second person and was also helpful in wrapping my head around writing in second person. It also was very similar to the style in which the book was written and helped with how I should write in that style, as it's very poetic and description based.

  2. Hey Rosalie,

That's great your trying a different approach, with the POV. I found your description of the book quite entailing with your POV, I read the poem and I've got the gist of your narrative. I actually opted for the easy option but this approach sounds more interesting.
Cool story line Rosalie, can't wait for your final FF.
